Adults are black dorsally with three broad crossbands in brightly yellow color. Females are mostly bigger and more round than the males. The patterns of the animals are very variable which makes each frogs pattern unique. Patterns does not seem to be correlated to geography normally even though there is a few variations.
The frogs prefer wet or moist foresteed lowland regions and temperatures often reach 30°C or warmer. They are mostly found at altitudes between 50-800 meters above sea level at the forest floors. Mostly among leaf litter, fallen trees, stones and occasionally trees.
The frogs feeds at insects (mostly ants) and is diurnal. The frog is
Diffrent morphs found in hobby
Nominat or StandardThis includes the "yellow standard", "Orange" (also called banded in europe), "green footed".
Fine Spotted
This morph is a bit smaller than the regular leucomelas and has lots of tiny spots alover the back. Sometimes it's even looking like some kind of net all over the back. This frog seems quite rare in hobby compared to the 'nominat'. It's probably alot more hard to breed.
Banded
This morph comes from British Guyana and should not be mixed up with the orange or banded that has been in the hobby for years. The banded leucomelas where imported in 2005 to USA. This morph is bigger than the 'nominat' and the bands are rarely broken by spots. Color can range from yellow to orange.
